An average shirt takes 2,700 liters of water to make. From fiber production, assembly, transport, all the way up to product use, each item consumes valuable resources and leaves out harmful waste on our environment. As of 2022, the fashion industry is responsible for 10% of global carbon emissions. Without action, it is estimated that there will be a 50% rise in worldwide greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2025, mainly due to a 70% surge in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions that are associated with energy production.
The fast-paced nature of the industry, fueled by fast fashion and planned obsolescence, has led to a culture of overconsumption and waste. However, there is growing awareness and action towards sustainable and ethical practices in the industry, with more brands and consumers embracing circularity, upcycling, and other eco-friendly initiatives.

To help tackle this problem, we research and rate brands so that consumers can make more informed purchasing decisions. We start this process by sifting through all publicly-available information about each brand in order to assess how they conduct their operations in the teeth of mounting environmental issues.
Occasionally, we reach out to companies for clarification on any details that seem unclear. We then interpret the gathered data using our Sustainability Rating System, a 5-point rating scale that we developed to clearly illustrate how eco-friendly each brand’s practices are. Rating results for each brand are outlined in a concise report, which can be accessed through our database.
